Join staff from the Bus for Outdoor Access & Teaching ("The BOAT Bus") for a Level 1 Instructor certification course in Leave No Trace. Rooted in curriculum from the national Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics, this two day certification helps balance a fundamental question: how do we get more people outside, in more inclusive ways, while balancing the increased pressure on ecosystems and public lands?
Participants taking the two-day Level 1 Instructor Course learn Leave No Trace skills, ethics, and techniques for educating others about these low-impact practices. In-person Level 1 Instructor Courses typically occur over two consecutive days and involve spending more than half of the course outdoors. Level 1 Instructor Course graduates are prepared to offer Leave No Trace Skills Courses and Workshops to their community.
Register:
Space is limited to 12 participants and registration is necessary.
About BOAT
BOAT's mission is to get more people outside, and they do it by empowering diverse impact organizations with the resources they need to run trips that honor their own mission and values. That includes training and skills development for aspiring or experienced outdoor leaders. This is a dynamic and interactive workshop, and is equal parts learning to be a best-in-class outdoor educator, getting tips and tricks on how to influence and encourage behavior change, and learning the best practices for Leave No Trace across social and ecological ecosystems.
BOAT’s approach emphasizes a mix of ecological understanding and research-based social dynamics that help you understand how to intervene thoughtfully when approaching others, be they strangers, clients, or your own students. We’ll approach Leave No Trace from a lens of inclusion, and spend time thinking about how we mix getting more people outside with having less impact. We’ll discuss classic practices – pooping in the woods, hiking on and off-trail, cooking – as well as newer topics in Leave No Trace – social media use, cross cultural communication, and climate change.
